Introduction to our Trail

The pitstops along the Civic District Trail I was part of Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)'s Civic District Master plan in 1988. The plan was part of the government's intention to promote the area as 'Singapore's Civic and Cultural Hub'. This area was already homed to some of Singapore's most valuable and historic structures from the earliest in 1820s (The Arts House). Some of these structures were part of Raffles' Town Plan in 1822. Parks and national monuments were then added by the Singapore government to create 'a shared identity and nationhood' for this area in years to come.

In the assigned trail, the start point was the Raffles' Landing Site. However, we chose a different perspective to start from by embarking our trail from the Civilian War Memorial site first. This was because Japanese Occupation was one significant event that occurred to Singapore and regrettably, many lives were taken away. We chose to end our trail at The Padang, where Singapore celebrated her first National Day Parade in 1966. Through this trail, it has recreated a surge of emotions, in seeking to understand how Singapore has progressed through the years, where we all can proudly call upon as our home, truly.
